Alappuzha is an administrative region along Kerala's coast in India, woven through with canals, lagoons and interconnected waterways. This coastal territory stretches along the Arabian Sea and forms part of a low-lying delta where water shapes much of the land.
The area developed into a trading hub in the 18th century after Raja Kesavadas founded a port here. This port linked the coast to overseas trade routes and brought merchants from distant lands into the region.
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race on Punnamada Lake brings thousands of participants who compete in traditional snake boats measuring up to 100 feet in length.
National Highway 66 runs through the area and connects it to larger cities further north and south. Boats operate regularly on the waterways and offer another way to move between places.
The Kuttanad area contains fields that lie below sea level where farmers grow rice. This method requires special embankments and drainage systems to keep saltwater out and maintain dry growing land.
