Mullakkal Temple, Hindu temple in Alappuzha, Kerala
Mullakkal Temple is a Hindu shrine in Alappuzha that follows traditional Kerala architectural style, featuring an open-roofed inner sanctum and surrounding grounds planted with jasmine. The structure includes prayer halls and gathering spaces where visitors can observe the layout and experience the temple's calm environment.
The shrine was established roughly 500 years ago when soldiers brought a goddess idol to a jasmine garden in the area. King Devanarayana of Chembakasserry subsequently constructed the temple, establishing it as an important spiritual location for the region.
The temple holds particular significance for women, who lead ceremonies and participate actively in its daily rituals and seasonal celebrations. The goddess worshipped here represents a connection to the local community's spiritual traditions and their practice of honoring the divine feminine.
The temple is open daily in two time slots, one in the early morning and one in the evening, allowing visitors to worship during both periods. Photography is prohibited inside the temple, so visitors should plan accordingly and focus on observing the space directly.
On the first Sunday of December, the temple transforms into a space where women exclusively lead all ceremonies and light numerous oil lamps throughout the grounds. This rare occurrence celebrates the role of women in religious practice and draws devotees seeking this special experience.
