St. Mary's Church, Vechoor

St. Mary's Church in Vechoor sits on the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake and shows features typical of Kerala church buildings. The structure blends local building styles with its religious purpose and has shaped the lakeside landscape for several centuries.

The church received official permission to be built in 1463 through support from the Archdeacon of Angamali Archdiocese. This privilege marked a turning point for establishing a Christian community in the area and laid the foundation for centuries of religious practice.

On September 8, many believers gather to honor Mary, known locally as Vechoor Muthiamma, in a celebration deeply rooted in the community. This annual gathering shapes the prayer life and spiritual identity of the congregation throughout the year.

The church is easily reached by bus from Vaikom and Cherthala, making it convenient to visit. Cherthala railway station lies about 12 kilometers away and provides travel options for visitors coming from larger cities.

Inside the church is a painted image of Mary that is believed to be an exact copy of a portrait by Saint Luke. This artwork holds deep religious meaning for pilgrims and believers who visit seeking connection to early Christian artistic traditions.
