Pakyong Airport, Airport in Gangtok, India
Pakyong Airport is a commercial airport in the Indian state of Sikkim, positioned at roughly 1400 meters elevation in the eastern Himalayas. The terminal building holds up to one hundred passengers at a time and offers basic facilities for domestic flights.
Planning for the airport began in 2008 after approval from the Indian economic cabinet. Delays caused by compensation negotiations with landowners pushed the opening back to 2018.
The airport takes its name from the nearby village of Pakyong and sits on a mountain plateau shaped by extensive earthwork. Travelers can see forested slopes and deep valleys directly from the terminal.
SpiceJet serves the route regularly and connects Sikkim with other Indian cities. Prepaid taxis wait outside the terminal and take visitors to hotels and sights in the surrounding area.
The mountain location allows only visual flight procedures, which means that fog or clouds can quickly prevent takeoffs and landings. Pilots must therefore have backup plans in case the weather turns.
