Sundha Mata Temple, Hindu temple in Jalore, India
Sundha Mata is a Hindu temple in Rajasthan, India, built from white marble at 850 meters (2,790 feet) elevation on Sundha Mountain. The design echoes the Dilwara temples of Mount Abu, with delicate carvings and open courtyards that allow light and wind to pass through.
An inscription from 1262 AD documents the Chauhan dynasty victory and marks the earliest known written mention of the site. Further inscriptions from 1326 and 1727 record important regional changes and expansions to the temple complex.
The name Sundha comes from a Sanskrit word for beauty, which pilgrims have associated with this mountain region for centuries. Devotees often walk the final steps barefoot and bring coconuts and red cloth as offerings, which they place before the shrine.
The temple is open daily and visitors can either take the ropeway or climb on foot, depending on fitness and available time. Morning and evening hours offer cooler weather and fewer crowds, especially outside festival periods.
An 800-meter (half-mile) ropeway, the first of its kind in Rajasthan, carries visitors to the temple and offers wide views over the dry hill country during the ride. Older travelers receive discounted fares for the trip, which makes access easier for many.
