Rajasthan is a state in northwestern India that covers 342,239 square kilometers (132,139 square miles) with deserts, mountain ranges, lakes, forests, and old settlements. It is the largest Indian state by area and borders Pakistan to the west as well as five other Indian states.
The region changed from Rajputana into Rajasthan in 1949 when several princely states merged to form the modern administrative division of India. Before that, Rajput clans had controlled these territories for centuries and built fortified palaces and forts.
Traditional art forms include Ghoomar dance performances, block printing textiles, leather crafts, and blue pottery from different regions. Artisans produce these goods locally and offer them at markets, where visitors can watch the creation process.
The capital city Jaipur connects to major destinations through rail networks, while temperatures remain moderate between October and March for comfortable travel. Many towns and historical sites lie along main transport routes, allowing visitors to reach multiple places during a trip.
In 33 districts, former royal residences were converted into hotels, allowing visitors to experience accommodations in authentic historical buildings. Some of these repurposed palaces preserve original furniture, wall paintings, and architectural details from the time of rule.
