New Jalpaiguri Junction railway station, Railway junction in Jalpaiguri district, India.
New Jalpaiguri Junction is a railway hub in Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal, operating eight platforms with six broad-gauge tracks and two narrow-gauge tracks. The platforms run parallel to each other, sheltered by modern roofs, while the narrow-gauge tracks connect on the side and allow transfers between both gauges.
The junction opened in 1960 to replace the disrupted rail connections after the partition of India in 1947. It became the main gateway for travel to the northeast of the country and to Darjeeling.
The junction connects the broad-gauge network with the narrow-gauge line to Darjeeling, whose trains depart directly from the platform. Travelers switch between both systems without leaving the station premises, making access to the Himalaya easier.
Travelers find free WiFi, air-conditioned waiting rooms, and dormitories directly inside the station building. Taxis, auto-rickshaws, and buses wait outside the main entrance and take passengers to destinations in the region.
The Mitali Express connects this station with Dhaka in Bangladesh and is one of the few international trains in South Asia. Travelers cross the border on the train and experience the transition between two countries without changing trains.
