Mandapeshwar Caves

The Mandapeshwar complex contains multiple rock-cut chambers featuring detailed sculptures, relief carvings, and Buddhist architectural designs throughout the stone walls.

Established in the 1st century CE, these caves served as meditation spaces and living quarters for Buddhist monks along the ancient Konkan coastal trade routes.

The cave chambers include viharas for monastic residence, inscriptions detailing religious practices, and water cisterns demonstrating advanced engineering methods.

Visitors can reach the caves by taking a local train to Borivali Station and completing the journey with a short auto-rickshaw ride to the entrance.

The name derives from mandapa meaning hall and Ishwar referring to deity, reflecting the transformation from Buddhist to Hindu influences over centuries.
