Hasimara Air Force Station, Indian Air Force base in Alipurduar district, West Bengal, India
Hasimara Air Force Station is an active military airfield in Hasimara, in the Indian state of West Bengal. It sits close to the borders with Bhutan and Bangladesh, giving it a strategically sensitive position in the northeast of the country.
The station was founded during the British colonial period and passed to the newly formed Indian Air Force after independence in 1947. It was expanded several times over the following decades, especially after regional conflicts in the 1960s and 1970s highlighted the strategic importance of the northeast.
This is an active military base and access is not permitted to the public under any circumstances. The surrounding area is under security restrictions, so it is best to keep a respectful distance from the perimeter.
Hasimara sits within what is known as the Chicken's Neck, a narrow strip of land that connects northeastern India to the rest of the country, giving the base an unusual geopolitical role. This corridor is so narrow that from the air, multiple international borders can be reached within a very short flying time.
