Matiabag Palace, Royal palace in Gauripur, India
Matiabag Palace is a royal residence perched on a hilltop near the Godadhar River in Gauripur. The building combines Hindu, Mughal, and British architectural styles across 24 rooms that showcase different design influences.
Construction of this palace took place between 1904 and 1914, when Chinese carpenters from Kolkata built it for Raja Prabhat Chandra Barua. The project represented a significant investment in the region during the colonial period.
The palace reflects the tastes of its royal family through rooms decorated with furnishings and objects from different periods. Residents here shaped Assamese music and film, leaving traces of their artistic work still visible in the building today.
The site is most easily reached from Dhubri, which lies just a short distance away. Visitors should check access conditions and opening times in advance, as this is now a protected heritage site.
The Government of Assam acquired the building in 2023 with plans to convert it into a heritage museum for public access. This purchase marked a turning point in preserving the site for future generations.
