Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Park, Regional park in Indore, India
Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Park is a large green space in Indore, Maharashtra, built around a central lake with landscaped gardens and walking paths. The grounds also contain botanical sections, boating stations, an artist village, a Rajasthani heritage display area, and a hedge maze.
The park was opened in 2003 by the Indore Development Authority and named after the then Prime Minister of India. It was part of a broader urban plan to add green spaces to the growing city.
The Artist Village inside the park displays works by local creators who exhibit there regularly. A separate section recreates traditional Rajasthani building styles and decorative patterns, giving visitors a sense of how that region looks and feels.
The grounds are very large, so comfortable footwear is recommended as there is a lot of walking between the different areas. Visitors who want to see both the maze and the botanical sections should allow plenty of time, as both reward a slow visit.
The park's maze is made from Ficus elastica hedges, a rubber tree that grows well in the local climate and forms thick, easy to maintain walls. Unlike many garden mazes, it is laid out in a square grid pattern rather than a curved or irregular design.
