Hampi, town in India

Hampi is a small town in Vijayanagara district with ruins and temples scattered across a large area that tell stories of a powerful empire. The architecture features massive stone pillars, granite blocks, and temples with tall towers called gopurams, decorated with carvings of gods and mythical creatures.

Hampi was the center of the Vijayanagar Empire, known for its wealth and busy markets where traders sold gold, diamonds, and spices. The empire fell and the city declined, but the ruins remain today as evidence of that once-grand civilization.

Hampi is named after the goddess Parvati, who is said in Hindu mythology to have meditated on the Hemakuta hills, and the Tungabhadra River was once called Pampa. Today, visitors see carvings of gods and mythological scenes in the temples, connecting the place to these ancient stories.

Visit during the cooler months from October to February when the weather is pleasant and exploration is comfortable. It is best to explore in early mornings or late afternoons to avoid the intense midday heat, wear comfortable shoes, and bring water.

The Stone Chariot is a famous architectural piece that looks like a small temple on wheels, sitting among the ruins. Many travelers stop here to take photographs and hear stories about this admired work of art.
