Sult, Administrative block in Almora district, India
Sult is a community development block in Almora district, in the state of Uttarakhand, northern India, made up of many small villages spread across hilly terrain. The settlements are linked by footpaths and a main road running through the area.
Sult was set up as an administrative unit to bring together the scattered villages of the Kumaon hills under a single local authority. Over the decades, movement toward cities pulled people away from many of these villages, changing settlement patterns across the block.
Kumaoni is the language most people speak in everyday life across the block, alongside Hindi. Local temples act as meeting points where festivals bring villagers together and mark the rhythm of the year.
The area is reached via the Almora-Bageshwar road, which runs through the block and connects it to nearby towns. Visiting between March and June or in September and October makes travel along local roads easier, as conditions are generally better during those months.
Some villages within the block, such as Hadoli and Numa, are now completely empty, while others like Amdali have only a handful of people left. Walking through the area, it is easy to come across abandoned houses standing next to still-inhabited ones.
