The Vijayanagara Empire was a major kingdom in southern India spanning several modern states and lasting from 1336 to 1646. Its capital at Hampi served as a major administrative and trading center with numerous temples, palaces, and public structures.
The empire was founded in 1336 by two brothers who established it as a defense against invasion from the north. It remained a significant power until military forces invaded from outside and weakened its control in the early 1600s.
The temples and palaces built during this period display a style that blends Hindu and Muslim influences, reflecting the artistic exchanges of the era. Craftspeople created intricate stone carvings and decorative elements that remain visible in the surviving structures.
Today visitors can explore the ruins of the capital, which spread across a large area and are accessible in many places. The visit works best with comfortable shoes and plenty of time, as there is much to see and pathways are sometimes uneven.
The trading network connected the empire with merchants from Portugal, Arabia, and Persia who exchanged horses, textiles, and precious stones for agricultural goods and spices. These connections made the markets meeting points of different worlds.
