Ahvaz

Ahvaz is a provincial capital in southwestern Iran that spreads along the Karun River. The built-up area covers both riverbanks and connects different neighborhoods through nine bridges.

The settlement began in the time of the Achaemenids in the 1st millennium BCE under the name Tareiana. During Sassanid rule in the 3rd century, the location became a center for textile production.

The city carries a name with ancient Iranian roots and serves today as the administrative seat of a province with several ethnic groups. Along the Karun waterfront, residents gather in the evening for walks and tea drinking.

An international airport lies north of the city and offers connections to Tehran and other Iranian cities. The bridges over the Karun allow visitors to move between the two riverbanks and reach different parts of town.

The White Bridge made of steel was completed in 1936 and reaches a length of 501 meters (about 1,644 feet). Its construction counts among the early modern infrastructure projects in the region.
