Tabriz

Tabriz is the provincial capital of East Azerbaijan in northwestern Iran, sitting in a broad valley basin at the foot of the Sahand range. The modern street grid runs through residential neighborhoods, industrial zones, and green spaces that cover many kilometers.

The settlement already served as a trading post on the caravan routes between East and West in antiquity. From 1501, the town became the first capital of the Safavid dynasty until the rulers moved their seat to Qazvin.

Daily life revolves around the many bazaar lanes, where merchants sell spices, fabrics, and brassware. Families gather in public parks at the edge of town for evening picnics and tea under the plane trees.

The city is well connected by main roads and offers lodging in all price ranges. Visitors planning to explore the bazaar should arrive in the morning when most shops are open and the lanes are not yet crowded.

In workshops around the bazaar, craftspeople still knot carpets by hand following patterns that date back centuries. Some families preserve designs passed down through several generations and use the same techniques as their ancestors.
