Evin Prison, Political prison in Tehran, Iran
Evin Prison is a detention facility in northern Tehran built in the Pahlavi architectural style. The complex consists of multiple buildings with separate wings administered by different government departments.
The facility opened in 1971 under Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi and originally held a smaller number of detainees. The population expanded to over 1500 inmates by 1977.
Iranian authorities refer to the facility as 'Evin University' due to the large number of students, intellectuals, and academics detained within its walls.
The facility sits in District 2 of Tehran and is divided into several sections. Different areas fall under the oversight of separate authorities with their own access protocols.
In October 2022, a fire broke out during nationwide demonstrations. The incident resulted in casualties and required military deployment to regain control.
