Sharaf Caravanserai

Sharaf Caravanserai is a historical lodging building in Sarakhs County, Iran, featuring a large central courtyard surrounded by multiple chambers and corridors. These spaces accommodated travelers and their animals, forming a functional hub for merchants crossing trade routes.

The building was established in 1114 and underwent major renovations in 1154, marking an important phase in Seljuk architectural development. These improvements reflected the dynasty's continued investment in key trading stations along vital routes.

The structure demonstrates traditional Persian building techniques through its brick and stucco work, reflecting the refined craftsmanship of Seljuk architecture. The central courtyard layout follows the classic design pattern meant to shelter travelers and their animals.

The site sits on elevated terrain and is accessible through the Marzdaran Rural District, requiring some planning to reach. Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant conditions for exploring the grounds and structures.

The site gained recognition as an Iranian National Heritage property in 1942, but its global significance was only acknowledged through UNESCO status in 2023. This delayed international recognition highlights how many important locations remain relatively unknown outside their regions until recently.
