Kashkan Bridge, Ancient stone bridge in Khorramabad County, Iran
Kashkan Bridge is a large stone structure in Khorramabad County built from river stones and limestone with mortar. The construction features fourteen piers and twelve vaults spanning roughly 320 meters across the river.
The structure was built in the fourth century after the Hijra under the rule of Abul Najm Badr ibn Hosnavieh. Its creation falls within a period when new river crossings were built to secure trade routes.
The bridge served as a crucial meeting point for merchants and travelers crossing the region for centuries. Visitors still recognize it as a symbol of the ancient trade routes that once connected distant communities through this valley.
The bridge is best reached on foot, and sturdy shoes are helpful for walking safely on the old stones. The best time to visit is outside the rainy season when the river is less swollen.
The twelve vaults of the structure were more than just load-bearing elements; they offered travelers shelter and resting space during their journeys. This dual function as both bridge and lodging made it a destination in itself along the trade route.
