Bibi Dokhtaran Mausoleum, 15th-century shrine in Shiraz, Iran
The Bibi Dokhtaran Mausoleum is a square shrine with a central dome built from brick, plaster, and decorative tiles, situated near the Shah Cheragh shrine. The structure includes a courtyard featuring a square pool and surrounding gardens that frame the building.
The shrine was built during the Ilkhanid period to honor Bibi Khadijeh, a descendant of Imam Sajjad. The structure underwent major restoration after earthquake damage affected its condition.
The shrine displays traditional Persian architectural elements through its red brick walls, intricate tile patterns, and wooden lattice screens that cast delicate shadows indoors. These details remain visible today and shape how visitors experience the craftsmanship of the space.
The entrance is located near the Shah Cheragh shrine in the Sarbagh neighborhood, making it easy to find. Visitors should be prepared for uneven surfaces in the courtyard and wear comfortable footwear.
Historically, young women visited this shrine to pray for suitable marriages, tying cloth pieces as symbols of their wishes. This custom gave the shrine its name, which means 'Ladies Shrine' in Persian.
