Atiq Jameh Mosque of Shiraz, Ancient mosque in Shiraz, Iran

The Atiq Jameh Mosque is a large house of prayer in Shiraz with two underground chambers called Shabestans that help regulate temperature in the prayer areas. The ceilings and walls throughout feature intricate tilework and brick patterns that define its interior.

This mosque was founded around 894 CE to mark the conquest of Shiraz by the Saffarid dynasty. The building underwent major reconstruction and renovation work during the later Safavid period.

The southern area displays cedar wood patterns on its walls, while the northern section features elaborately decorated doorways and wall niches. Visitors can observe these details while moving through the different spaces of the prayer halls.

Visitors should find the main entrance on the western side and approach from the direction east of Shah Cheragh shrine. Comfortable shoes are useful since you will move through several levels and between upper and lower areas.

Within the Khodaye Khane section sits a rare 30-part Quran manuscript from the era of King Ismail Safavi. This precious religious collection draws visitors interested in sacred manuscripts and their history.
