Shapur Cave, Limestone cave with ancient statue in Kazerun County, Iran
The cave entrance rises 30 meters high in the Zagros Mountains, extending into multiple terraces that descend into the limestone formation.
The cave contains a 7-meter tall statue of Shapur I, the second Sasanian ruler, which was restored to standing position in 1957.
Two stone inscriptions at the entrance document both the original text from Naqsh-e Rajab and details of the modern restoration process.
The cave sits 800 meters above ground level, requiring visitors to climb steep paths to reach the entrance near Bishapur City.
Three ancient water basins remain behind the statue, alongside unfinished relief preparations on the rock walls of the fourth terrace.
