Colossal Statue of Shapur I

The colossal statue reaches 6.7 meters in height and 2 meters in width, featuring detailed facial characteristics, jewelry, and traditional Sassanian royal garments.

Created around 260 CE, this monument depicts Shapur I, the second king of the Sassanian Empire who achieved notable victories against the Roman Empire.

The statue displays Persian royal elements through its crenellated crown, pearl necklace, earrings, and clothing with ornamental flame patterns carved into limestone.

The statue stands 35 meters from the cave entrance, requiring visitors to climb stairs and follow designated paths constructed during the 1957 restoration.

The sculpture emerged from a natural stalagmite formation within the cave, incorporating the geological feature into its construction method.
