Sassanid Archaeological Landscape of Fars Region, Archaeological site complex in Fars Province, Iran
The Sassanid Archaeological Landscape comprises eight separate sites distributed across 639 hectares in Fars Province. These locations contain ancient fortresses, palaces, and ceremonial structures built during the Sassanid Empire.
The structures date from the Sassanid Empire between 224 and 651 CE, when the region functioned as a central power hub. This period ended with Arab conquest, fundamentally transforming the landscape.
The sites show how Persian builders combined construction methods with influences from neighboring regions. This architectural blending is still visible today in the surviving structures.
Visiting the sites works best through guided tours organized from Shiraz, covering all locations. Spring and autumn provide comfortable temperatures for exploring the ruins.
The Victory Reliefs at Firuzabad display stone carvings showing military victories on a monumental scale. These reliefs rank among the most striking examples of Sassanid sculptural work in the region.
