Hafnarfjörður

Built on volcanic terrain, Hafnarfjörður extends across dark lava fields near the southwestern coast, encompassing residential areas and an industrial harbor district.

The settlement emerged as a trading post during the 14th century, later joining the Hanseatic League when German merchants controlled local maritime commerce.

The annual Viking Festival in June brings historical reenactments, traditional crafts demonstrations, and combat displays throughout the streets and harbor areas.

Three geothermal swimming pools offer year-round access to heated water, with the main facility Suðurbæjarlaug providing multiple pools and relaxation areas.

The Hellisgerði Park contains marked paths through lava formations where, according to local tradition, communities of elves make their residence.
