Seltún Hot Springs, Geothermal hot springs in Krýsuvík, Iceland
The thermal area contains steam vents, mud pools, and hot springs with temperatures reaching 100 degrees Celsius, creating a landscape of orange and yellow colors.
Sulfur mining operations took place at Seltún until 1880, marking the end of a practice that had been ongoing since the thirteenth century.
The springs represent the geological forces that shape Iceland, with their mineral-rich waters and continuous geothermal activity drawing visitors throughout the year.
The site features a maintained boardwalk system with viewing platforms, allowing visitors to observe the geothermal phenomena from secure vantage points.
A drilling accident in 1999 created an explosive vent in the ground, demonstrating the unpredictable nature of geothermal activity in the area.
