Hvannadalshnúkur, Mountain summit in Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland
The 2110-meter-high Hvannadalshnúkur rises from the northwestern edge of Öræfajökull volcano, forming the highest point in Iceland.
British explorer Frederick Howell completed the first recorded climb of Hvannadalshnúkur in 1891, accompanied by local guides Pall Jonsson and Thorlakur Thorlaksson.
The mountain stands as a symbol of Icelandic mountaineering tradition, attracting climbers who seek to reach the country's highest elevation point.
The ascent requires specialized glacier equipment, certified guides, and participants must attend a mandatory safety briefing at Skaftafell Base the evening before departure.
The summit sits atop Europe's largest active volcano outside Italy, offering views across Vatnajökull glacier and the Atlantic Ocean during clear conditions.
