Austurvöllur, Public square in central Reykjavik, Iceland

The square houses the Parliament House, Reykjavik Cathedral, and Hotel Borg, forming a central point for governmental and religious institutions.

During the 2008 economic crisis, the square became the focal point of weekly protests that led to the resignation of Prime Minister Geir Haarde's government.

A bronze statue of Jon Sigurosson, who led Iceland's independence movement, stands at the center of the square as a symbol of national identity.

The square perimeter contains numerous cafes, restaurants, and bars, with pedestrian-friendly paths connecting to major streets like Vallarstræti and Pósthússtræti.

In winter, the square transforms with a large Christmas tree, while summer brings extended daylight hours for outdoor dining and social gatherings.
