Austurvöllur

Austurvöllur is a public square in the heart of Reykjavik bordered by the Parliament House, Reykjavik Cathedral, and Hotel Borg. The surrounding area contains cafes, restaurants, and bars, with walking paths that lead to nearby streets.

The square developed as a center for government and religious institutions over time. It became a gathering point for public protest during the 2008 financial crisis, when demonstrations led to the Prime Minister's resignation.

The statue of Jón Sigurðsson at the center symbolizes freedom and independence for Icelanders. People gather here to meet and connect with the nation's story.

The square is easy to walk around and well connected to main streets in the downtown area. It's best visited during the day when the surroundings are most active and the buildings are clearly visible.

A large Christmas tree appears in winter and becomes a focal point for seasonal gatherings. During summer, the extended daylight allows outdoor dining and socializing to continue well into the night.
