Barnafossar, Cascade system in Borgarbyggð, Iceland
The waters of Barnafoss flow through narrow passages in dark lava rock formations, creating strong rapids and whirlpools in the Hvítá river.
The natural stone bridge that once crossed the waterfall was destroyed following the tragic incident of two children falling into the rushing waters.
The name Barnafoss translates to Children's Falls, reflecting a local tale that has been passed down through generations of Icelandic families.
The waterfall is accessible through marked paths from a dedicated parking area, located one hour drive from Reykjavík along Route 1.
The water temperature remains constant throughout the year due to its source in underground springs flowing through the Hallmundarhraun lava field.
