Eldey, Volcanic island and nature reserve in Southern Peninsula Region, Iceland

Eldey is a volcanic island and nature reserve off southern Iceland featuring sheer cliffs that rise about 77 meters (250 feet) above the Atlantic Ocean. The island covers roughly 3 hectares and serves as home to thousands of seabirds that nest on its rocky ledges throughout the year.

The island received protected status in 1974, following the extinction of great auks here in 1844 when sailors captured the last breeding pair. This protection allowed new bird populations to settle and thrive on the island.

Northern gannets use the steep cliffs to raise their young in one of the world's largest breeding colonies. The sight of thousands of nesting birds shapes how visitors and locals understand this place as a refuge for seabirds.

The island is best viewed from a distance on land, as two webcams positioned on higher terrain allow observation of the bird colonies. Clear weather offers the best visibility for spotting the seabirds and their activity on the cliffs.

Great auks vanished from this location in 1844, and Eldey remains the last known place where they lived. Today the island stands as a symbol of nature rebuilding itself after profound loss.
