Eldey, Volcanic island and nature reserve in Southern Peninsula Region, Iceland
Rising 77 meters above sea level, Eldey features steep cliffs and covers an area of 3 hectares in the Atlantic Ocean.
The island gained protected status in 1974, following the extinction of great auks in 1844 when the last pair was captured by sailors.
Northern gannet colonies inhabit the island cliffs, with approximately 16,000 breeding pairs establishing one of the largest populations worldwide.
Two webcams positioned at the summit enable remote observation of the bird populations throughout different seasons of the year.
The surrounding volcanic system extends 40 kilometers along the Reykjanes Ridge, featuring multiple flat-topped ridges and various volcanic structures.
