Akureyri Botanical Garden, Botanical garden in Akureyri, Iceland.
Akureyri Botanical Garden is a garden near the Arctic Circle containing more than 7000 plant species adapted to northern climates. The site spreads across 3.6 hectares and displays diverse plant collections from different continents.
The site began in 1912 as a public park founded and shaped by local women. The botanical section was added in 1957 to study how plants adapt to Arctic conditions.
The garden displays native Icelandic plants and shrubs that have shaped the region's character for generations. You can see how these species still thrive in the surrounding hills and valleys today.
The garden is accessible from June through September with longer weekday hours than on weekends. The paths are well laid out and allow for a comfortable walk through all areas.
The garden sits 40 to 50 meters above sea level and benefits from the sheltering effects of the fjord, which moderates temperatures. This special location allows plants to thrive that would not normally survive at this latitude.
