Skaftafell

The park holds glacial tongues, mountains, waterfalls, and valleys within 4807 square kilometers near the Arctic circle at latitude 64 degrees north.

The area functioned as a major farm and meeting place until 1362, when the Öræfajökull volcanic eruption destroyed the local community.

The region maintains strong connections to Icelandic traditions, as local farmers historically combined sheep farming with coastal hunting and crafting using materials from stranded ships.

The park provides year-round access through Route 1, with facilities including campgrounds, visitor centers, and educational programs managed by park rangers.

The location features black basalt columns at Svartifoss waterfall and experiences frequent sunny days despite its position in southern Iceland.
