Naval Air Station Keflavik, Military air station in Reykjanes peninsula, Iceland
Naval Air Station Keflavik is a military installation on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwestern Iceland, located directly beside Keflavik International Airport. The site spreads across several hangars, radar towers, and runways that once served American forces stationed in the North Atlantic.
The base was built during World War II to safeguard Allied air routes across the North Atlantic. After the war ended, it remained active as a United States Navy facility until 2006, serving mainly as a monitoring post for Soviet movements.
The station employed hundreds of Icelandic civilians, fostering connections between American military personnel and local communities throughout its operational years.
The facility is now part of the civilian airport and is not open for public tours. Some of the former military structures can be seen from the airport grounds.
During the Cold War, the base hosted anti-submarine aircraft that monitored the GIUK gap, a stretch of ocean between Greenland and Scotland. This passage was considered a critical route for Soviet vessels moving into the Atlantic.
