Castle of the lakes

The Castle of the Lakes is a medieval fortification within La Mandria Natural Park, built from multiple stone structures arranged to serve both defense and residence. The construction reflects traditional fortress design adapted to the needs of a royal dwelling.

Construction was ordered and directed by Victor Emmanuel II of Italy, demonstrating royal influence over regional architecture in the 19th century. The structure evolved from earlier fortifications that had occupied this strategic location for centuries.

The castle demonstrates how nobility adapted their residences over time, merging defensive functions with domestic comfort. Walking through the site today, visitors can sense this balance between fortress and living space.

The castle is reached via marked paths within the park, with parking available near the main entrance of La Mandria. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for variable weather, as parts of the site are exposed.

The castle was deliberately positioned at a location surrounded by multiple lakes and water features that together form a natural defensive system. This water-rich setting gives the ruins a distinctive quality that visitors notice when walking through the grounds.
