Rescaldina, Italian comune
Rescaldina is a commune in the Metropolitan City of Milan, located northeast of Legnano, made up mainly of residential houses and small shops. Fields and green areas surround the built-up part of town, giving it a rural feel that sets it apart from the urban core of Milan.
Rescaldina has agricultural origins and began to change in the 19th century when the Bassetti family set up a handloom fabric factory in 1840. That workshop was the starting point of the town's industrial growth and drew new residents to the area over the following decades.
The name Rescaldina comes from an old local term and reflects the town's deep roots in the area. Once a year, residents gather around the church for the feast of San Bernardo on September 16th to share food and celebrate the neighborhood.
Rescaldina is easy to reach from Milan and nearby towns by car or bus. Once there, getting around on foot or by bicycle is the most practical option since the town is compact and flat.
The coat of arms of Rescaldina shows a small castle and a wolf, taken from a character in the novel Marco Visconti: a squire named Lupo who escapes from a tower. It is quite rare for a town's official symbol to come directly from a work of fiction rather than from local history.
