Capitoline Hill, Sacred hill in Rome, Italy
The Capitoline Hill rises 44.7 meters above Rome between the Forum and Campus Martius as the smallest of the seven hills in the city.
The Gauls failed to conquer the hill in 390 BC when sacred geese alerted Roman soldiers to the invading army during a night assault.
The Capitoline Museums, established in 1734 as the first public museum worldwide, display significant Roman artifacts and artworks within the Renaissance palaces.
Visitors can reach the summit via the Cordonata, a wide ceremonial staircase that leads to the Piazza del Campidoglio designed by Michelangelo.
The bronze equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius in the central plaza represents the only surviving large ancient Roman bronze statue of a ruler.

Circular architecture has fascinated builders since ancient times. This collection brings together Roman amphitheatres like the Colosseum, medieval towers such as the Round Tower in Copenhagen, baroque domed structures and modern constructions. The circular form offers practical advantages for acoustic properties, structural stability and optimal space usage. The selected buildings serve various functions: religious temples, fortifications, observatories, museums and event venues. Each example demonstrates how architects have adapted the circular form to local conditions and cultural requirements. From ancient stone structures to contemporary skyscrapers, this selection documents technical evolution across centuries.
