San Pietro in Cariano, Italian comune
San Pietro in Cariano is a commune in the Province of Verona, set among the hills of the Valpolicella area in northern Italy. Vineyards cover most of the slopes, with old villas from the Venetian period and the Romanesque church of Pieve di San Floriano rising between them.
The Romans grew grapes here and made a wine called Retico, mentioned by writers such as Martial and Pliny the Elder. Later, during Venetian rule, wealthy families from Verona and Venice built grand villas across the hills to show their standing.
The name of this commune joins Saint Peter with the old Cariano area where it stands. Wine shapes daily life so deeply here that many families have lived and worked on the same estate for generations.
Five marked walking routes called Sanpietroincammino wind through vineyards and past historic buildings, and can be done on foot, by bike, or running. Many estates in the area welcome visitors for tastings and give a close look at how traditional wine is made.
Villa Serego, designed by Andrea Palladio, is one of the few examples of his work set within an active wine-growing area. Unlike most of his other villas, it was built for a family that worked the land directly rather than for urban patrons seeking a country retreat.
