Conversano, Administrative division in Puglia, Italy
Conversano is a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari situated at 219 meters in elevation, positioned about 30 kilometers southeast of Bari. Its center features an old town with a cathedral and a medieval castle on a hilltop, approximately 7 kilometers from the coast.
The settlement was founded in the Iron Age by the Iapygians as Norba and came under Roman control in 268 BC. It later became the capital of a county that extended toward Lecce.
The cathedral displays Romanesque features with three decorated portals and contains architectural elements from different building periods that show its long evolution.
The town is centrally located in Puglia and is easily accessible by road from Bari, which simplifies access for travelers in the southeastern region. Its elevated position offers good views of the surrounding countryside.
The castle on the hilltop features a distinctive round tower that reflects architectural development from the Norman-Hohenstaufen period. This tower is a rare example of such construction style in the region.
