Marchione Castle

Marchione Castle, Medieval castle in Conversano, Italy

Marchione Castle is a limestone structure built with a rectangular layout and four cylindrical towers positioned at each corner. The building spans three floors containing multiple halls, with symmetrical porticos on both the front and rear facades.

The castle was built in 1730 as a hunting lodge and summer retreat for the Acquaviva d'Aragona family, who held the title of counts of Conversano. The structure reflects the taste and resources of this noble family during the early 18th century.

The coats of arms and family trees of the Acquaviva d'Aragona are painted on canvas throughout the rooms, telling the story of this noble lineage. These paintings serve as a visual record of the family's place in the local region.

The castle is located near Conversano in the Apulia region and requires advance booking to visit. Plan enough time to explore the various rooms and exterior details, including the decorative windows along the walls.

The exterior walls feature circular window terraces arranged symmetrically, creating an unexpected visual detail rarely seen in summer residences of that era. These rounded openings add an unusual decorative element that distinguishes the castle from typical 18th century noble estates.
