Tolmezzo, Mountain municipality in Friuli Venezia Giulia region, Italy
Tolmezzo is a mountain commune in Friuli Venezia Giulia located at 323 meters in elevation, positioned between the Tagliamento River and the Bût stream. The settlement comprises several hamlets that together form a single administrative unit serving the surrounding region.
First documented in the 10th century as Tolmetium under the Patriarchate of Aquileia, this settlement remained under various rulers. It passed between Venetian and Austrian control through the centuries before becoming part of Italy in 1866.
The name reflects its position near the Tagliamento River, and the town carries on local craft traditions that shape daily life. Walking through the streets, you notice how residents maintain these skills in small workshops and shops.
The terrain is hilly, and the best time to explore is from spring through early autumn when weather is mild. The town is accessible by public transportation, and the various hamlets are within walking distance of each other.
The town received the Medal of Military Valour for wartime service and was named Alpine Town of the Year in 2017. These honors reflect how it proved its importance during hardship and maintains its mountain identity today.
