Brunello di Montalcino, DOCG red wine in Montalcino, Italy
Brunello di Montalcino is a red wine from Tuscany made exclusively from Sangiovese grapes grown in the hills around Montalcino. The wine shows a deep garnet color and develops aromas of vanilla, leather, and dark fruit as it ages in oak barrels.
In the 1870s, Clemente Santi and Ferruccio Biondi-Santi developed new winemaking methods for this pure Sangiovese wine in Montalcino. Their techniques established the foundation for modern production standards in the region.
The wine received Italy's first Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita status in 1980, marking its significance in Italian viticulture point.
This wine ages for at least five years before release and should be served between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius (64 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit). Decanting before serving helps open the complex aromas and separate any sediment.
The vineyards must be located on hills below 600 meters (1970 feet) in altitude, creating specific conditions for grape cultivation. This altitude limit influences the climate and soil composition that give the wine its characteristic taste.
