Sant’Agostino

Sant'Agostino is a Gothic church in Montalcino featuring a pointed portal decorated with pinnacles and decorative stonework. The interior walls are covered with detailed frescoes depicting religious figures and biblical narratives throughout the space.

The church was founded in 1227 by the Augustinian order and received its current Gothic appearance through major reconstruction in the late 14th century. This transformation significantly changed how the building looked from that time forward.

The interior walls display frescoes showing the Passion of Christ and scenes from the life of Saint Anthony Abbot, painted by a local artist centuries ago. As you walk through the church, these religious images appear on nearly every surface.

The church is adjoined by a convent that now operates as a nursing home and is not open to visitors. When you visit, focus on the church building itself, as the courtyard with the glass roof is not accessible to the public.

The building has undergone several changes throughout its history and was recently restored through collaboration between local authorities and private foundations. These restoration efforts have helped preserve the medieval artworks for future generations.
