The cathedral, constructed between 1818 and 1832 by architect Agostino Fantastici, replaced a 14th-century church built on the site of San Salvatore.
The cathedral houses notable artworks including the 1588 painting 'Immaculate Conception with Jesus and God the Father' by Francesco Vanni.
The cathedral maintains its position as an active religious center within the Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino since 1986.
Materials for constructing this cathedral came from the dismantled Romanesque church of San Pietro in Asso during the 19th century renovation.
