Rifugio Passo Principe, Mountain hut at 2601 meters in Pozza di Fassa, Italy.
Rifugio Passo Principe is a mountain hut located on the Passo Principe in the Dolomites, near Pozza di Fassa in northern Italy. It offers dormitory sleeping spaces and a dining area, sitting directly on a high pass between the rock walls of the Catinaccio massif.
The first shelter on this site was built in 1952 by Francesco Kofler to give mountain travelers a place to stop on the pass. In 2008, two experienced mountain guides completely rebuilt the structure from the ground up.
The hut sits on a pass that hikers have crossed for generations, connecting the Catinaccio and the surrounding Dolomite peaks. On summer days, walkers from across Europe stop here before continuing their routes.
A sleeping bag is recommended since bedding is not always provided, so it is worth checking in advance. Dinner should be reserved ahead of time, as the hut has limited space.
When the hut was rebuilt in 2008, the wooden elements were hand-cut and assembled on site without the use of heavy machinery. This was necessary because the location is too remote to bring up large equipment.
