Montebenedetto Charterhouse

Montebenedetto Charterhouse is a Carthusian monastery in the foothills near Turin, built from stone with typical Romanesque features including rounded arches and solid walls. The complex sits at about 1,120 meters elevation and contains multiple buildings with thick construction suited to the mountain climate.

This monastery was founded in 1198 and remained an important religious site for several centuries. In 1473, a major flood forced the monks to leave and relocate their community elsewhere.

The church displays craftsmanship details and stonework that reflect how monks shaped their surroundings through careful work. Visitors can see the marks of their daily devotion in the way the building was constructed and finished.

The monastery sits in the mountains and is accessible only by mountain roads, so wearing sturdy footwear is important for exploring the grounds. The best months to visit are June through October when mountain weather is most stable.

The complex spans across extensive forest, pasture, and meadow land that today functions as a learning center and working farm. This rural setting allows visitors to see how monastic life integrated with agricultural work and the surrounding landscape.
