Riserva naturale dell'Orrido di Chianocco, Regional nature reserve in Chianocco, Italy
The Riserva naturale dell'Orrido di Chianocco is a protected nature reserve centered on a deep gorge where a mountain stream has carved through limestone cliffs. The landscape includes riverside areas, rocky slopes, and woodland sections that support diverse plant and animal communities.
The reserve was established in 1980 to protect the area's natural and geological features and was later included in the Natura 2000 network. Archaeological discoveries show that people settled in this Alpine valley during prehistoric times.
The site takes its name from the ravine that defines its character. Visitors can observe a rare blend of Alpine and Mediterranean plant life covering the steep canyon walls.
The reserve can be explored using marked walking trails that connect different viewpoints and natural features throughout the area. Sturdy footwear is essential due to the steep terrain and rocks, particularly after rain.
The reserve is home to the only confirmed wild holm oak population in the Piedmont region, a species normally found in warmer climates. These trees survive here thanks to a sheltered microclimate created by the deep gorge.
