San Miniato, Medieval hilltop town in Tuscany, Italy
San Miniato is a municipality in the Province of Pisa that spreads across three hills about 140 meters above sea level. Defense walls and several towers surround the historic core and mark the boundaries of the original settlement.
The town was appointed seat of an imperial vicar for Tuscany in 1116 and gained a central administrative role. This position brought political influence and led to the development of the fortified settlement on the hills.
Ceramic bowls from the 13th century decorate the cathedral facade and show trade routes between Tuscany and the Mediterranean. The bowls were once carried as ballast on ships and then turned into church decoration.
The center sits on hills above the valley and requires some uphill walking through paved streets. The train station is located in the valley and connects to the historic core by bus or a short drive.
White truffles from the surrounding oak forests are sold at a market in November that runs for three weekends. Local hunters bring their finds directly into town and negotiate prices with dealers and chefs.
