Citara, Coastal beach in Forio, Italy
Citara is a sandy beach on the western side of Ischia island, in the municipality of Forio. The shoreline sits within a gentle bay framed by volcanic rock, where dark and light sand mix along the water's edge.
The bay around Citara was used in ancient times as a landing point for fishermen and traders working the western coast of Ischia. Over the centuries, the town of Forio grew around these coastal areas.
The name Citara is thought to come from a Greek word for a stringed instrument, possibly inspired by the sound of waves in the bay. Small fishing boats can still be seen pulled up on the shore in the early morning.
Part of the beach is free to use, while other sections are managed by beach clubs that offer loungers and umbrellas. There is little natural shade along the shore, so visiting in the early morning or late afternoon is a good idea.
Natural thermal springs rise through the sand at several spots along the shore, making the water noticeably warm in certain areas even outside summer. Visitors who walk barefoot along the water's edge can feel the difference underfoot without any special effort.
