Aqua Marcia, Roman aqueduct in Parco degli Acquedotti, Italy
The Aqua Marcia extends over 91 kilometers from springs in the Anio Valley to Rome through a system of underground channels and elevated arches.
The Roman Senate commissioned praetor Quintus Marcius Rex to construct this water system between 144 and 140 BC using funds from the conquest of Corinth.
Ancient Romans valued the water from this aqueduct for its purity and temperature, making it a central element of their water distribution network.
Visitors can observe the remaining arches and structures while walking or cycling through the Parco degli Acquedotti, which connects to the Appian Way.
The aqueduct introduced the first extensive use of elevated arches in Roman water infrastructure, spanning 9 kilometers along the Via Latina.
