Forte Casilina, Military fortification in Don Bosco district, Rome, Italy.
Forte Casilina is a military fortification near Rome featuring an isosceles trapezoid design with wide straight fronts and symmetrical sides. The structure includes a defensive moat with central and lateral gun chambers built into its walls.
The fort was built between 1881 and 1882 as part of a defensive ring around Rome. It was one of 15 forts constructed to protect the city during that period.
The name comes from the ancient Via Casilina road that once passed through this area. You can still see how Roman remains lie beneath the fort and influenced its construction.
The fort is located on Via Libano and is relatively easy to reach by standard transport. Check access conditions beforehand since the site is protected and may have limited visitor hours.
After its years as a working fort, the site became Italy's first military airfield and later served for decades as a storage depot for artillery supplies. This transformation shows how military needs changed over time.
